The incident occurred in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, resulting in the arrest of eight people. Surveillance video from the area shows the subjects arriving and brutally beating the world's largest rodent and one of the most peaceful animals in the animal kingdom with sticks and iron bars. This regrettable incident took place early Saturday morning in Ilha do Governador, a popular neighborhood near the international airport. Local police reported in a statement that the attackers were detained on Saturday after being identified. Regarding the capybara, a 65-kilogram male, it was taken to the Wildlife Care Center at Estácio University, in the southwest of Rio, where it is reported to have a head trauma, a hematoma around the left eye, and several injuries on its back.
